Farm – Appomattox, Virginia
Greene Environmental was originally contacted concerning an out-of-use heating oil UST located adjacent to a recently remodeled farm house. The tank was found to be leaking and was removed through the Virginia Petroleum Storage Tank Fund. During initial site activities, the drinking water well supplying the house and barns was found to be impacted with gasoline contamination. Through additional investigation, Greene Environmental determined the source of the gasoline contamination to be the location of buried farm tanks that had been removed during the 1980s. As part of cleanup activities, over 200 tons of petroleum contaminated soil was removed from the former farm tank location. Through proper coordination with DEQ officials, Greene Environmental has installed a replacement drinking water well on the property at no cost to the client. The site is currently being monitored with the expectation of permanent site closure within the year.

Inspection of the buried tanks found them to be leaking thus qualifying the property owner access to the Virginia Petroleum Storage Tank Fund (VPSTF). Greene Environmental removed the leaking tanks and 165 tons of contaminated soil. Due to the severity of the releases, temporary monitoring wells were installed and sampled for one year. Minimal impact to local groundwater was observed and documented. The site has now been closed from further study and the monitoring wells removed. Through proper coordination with officials at the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Greene performed the above work at no cost to the client.
